Belthangady is a beautiful Town just at the foothills of the Western Ghats. St. Therese Convent, a community of Ursuline Franciscan Sisters, is just near to the Most Holy Redeemer Parish Church at Belthangady. It is on the Mangalore- Dharmasthala route. It was in 1945 that the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters started sowing seeds of quality education in Parish School. They were invited there by Rev. Fr. E. P. Dias.
The sisters with their sensitivity foresaw the danger of many girls discontinuing their studies owing to the risks involved in commuting long distances to schools. So, the sisters daringly started St. Therese High School especially for girls in 1965. Mr. U. Madhava Nayak was the first Headmaster. In its infancy stage the school was located in the church Higher Primary School Hall building. After a considerable struggle the present building was constructed during the tenure of Str. Gertrude D’Sa as a Headmistress. This dream of having its own building on our own land was realized as the result of the goodwill of Miss Rossy Golman of Germany through the instrumentality of Rev. Fr. Edwin Pinto in 1979. Though in the beginning it was a Girl’s High School, Later in 1983 boys were admitted as there was no high school in the neighbourhood for boys and from then on co-education is in existence.
Right from the beginning the school has striven to form dutiful citizens, the result being a rush for admissions. Karnataka is experiencing a challengeing time for the Kannada Medium, School. Yet on the contrary St. Therese Kannada Medium School has proved otherwise. So far 4000 students have passed from this school and atpresent 466 students is being imparted value based education here. In the year 1989-90, 2004-05 and 2014-15 the school obtained 100% results. In the year 2009 St. Therese High School was honoured as the best aided High School in Belthangady Taluk. Mrs. Mary Grace Moris is honoured as the Best teacher in the District in 2003 and Mr. Gangadhar N, the Kannada teacher, was honoured with District Level Best teacher award in 2008.
‘Theresean Sambrama’ is the special feature in the school It’s a week programme including, Sports, Exhibition, Annual Day and such other activities. The Golden Jubilee of the establishment of the School is celebrated on 5 th January 2015 a series of programmes were conducted and made the Golden Jubilee a memorable one.
