Ursuline Sisters ventured into the education mission at Bejai in 1931, taking up teaching in the Lourdes Higher Elementary School which belonged to the parish. Rev. Mother Ernestine, then Superior of St Angela’s Convent and headmistress of Lourdes Higher Elementary School saw in the people a need for a nursery school and established St Angela Nursery School on June 1, 1960. As it had no building of its own it took shelter in St Angela’s Convent. It was a single class school, a tiny school for kids. Yet it was an important school which carved a niche in the heart of every student.
Sr Margarita was the first headmistress; childlike in her talk and cheerful in appearance she was loved by the kids. In the year1961 Sr Marie Dulcis was given the charge of the nursery school and she was the only teacher in the school till 1999. These very small of kids were welcomed by the warmth radiated by Sr Marie Dulcis. It was in 1999 that Sr. Matilda Cardoza joined the school. Later LKG and UKG sections were added to the nursery. This School has provided a foundation for the education of almost 4000 students who have passed through the portals of St Angela contributing to the welfare of society.
Sr. Matilda Cardoza with the heart of a mother coupled with foresight brought in freshness in the atmosphere of the School. On August 15, 2005 the new nursery block was blessed by Fr J.P Tauro, the parish priest of St Xavier’s, Bejai. The school was registered with the Department of Education in 2006. At present there are 136 students, cared for and nurtured in the hands of the dedicated teachers, getting a sound foundation for their future. Mr. Joseph D’Souza, Mrs. Florine D’Souza, Dr Gerald Abreo and family and other well- wishers continuously facilitate the infrastructure needed as well as the day-to- day needs of the tiny tots. Children’s park, sound system, AQUA drinking water facility, TV for recreation, stage for the students to display their talents on different occasions are the provisions made to give a conducive atmosphere for ‘play way learning’.
