Bhatkal is a small coastal town in the south of North Kanara, on the northen border of Udupi District. The West Coast National Highway 66 passes through it. The Muslim Navayaths and the Hindu communities are predominant in Bhatkal. Fr Vincent Pereira, the parish priest of Murudeshwar, persuaded the Bishop of Belgaum to invite the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters to the Diocese and in particular to his parish at Ternamakki. In 1971, at the invitation of the then Bishop of Belgaum, Most Rev. Ignatius Lobo, a small convent was opened by the name Anand Ashram at Ternamakki. From here two Sisters were visiting the families at Bhatkal and teaching the tiny tots. Later in 1973 they opened a convent in Bhatkal itself which in subsequent years gave birth to a prestigious educational Institution – Joy land Pre-Primary School and Anand Ashram Institutions Bhatkal

Recognizing the educational needs of the locality, our Sisters ventured into starting a nursery and a primary school in Bhatkal on June 1, 1973. A small rented house in a chawl in BapuSahed Compound near the old bus stand was the humble beginning of Anand Ashram Institutions. A part of it was used as Sister’s residence too. Thus Joyland Nursery School took birth on the lap of old Bhatkal. Sisters Jude, Blanch, Mable and SyraVeigas, the pioneers did the spadework. Because of their simple, unassuming way of life and unswerving dedication the place became the nucleus of Christian life at Bhatkal. For quite a number of years Joyland Nursery School was part of Anand Ashram Primary School. The headmistress of the Primary School was also the headmistress of Joyland Nursery School until 2006. In the Year 2006 Sr Alice D’Souza was appointed the headmistress of this Nursery School and she worked in that capacity until May 2014. A new Nursery Block with spacious airy classrooms was constructed and was inaugurated on June 27, 2014 to accommodate the growing number of students and make the time they spend in the school campus comfortable and productive.
Joyland Play Home obtained the permission by the Education Department in the year in 2007 and named thereafter as Joyland Pre- Primary School. Sr. Irene Mathias took charge of Joyland Pre-Primary School in June 2014. The present strength of the school is 398. This speaks volumes of the good reputation of the school, and the recognition the parents have shown towards the loving and caring service rendered by the staff to the young students.
