Education in the English medium is fast becoming a necessity in the present times. English Medium schools are mushrooming everywhere. The craze for English draws the parents to these schools. Belthangady was no exception. Even though the Kannada Medium High School was the best school in the area and many who got educated in this school are well placed in life, people wanted to send their children to English medium schools. Quite a number of good and promising students who completed their education in the Primary School of the parish moved out elsewhere in search of English medium schools. Parents who wanted their children to be trained in the care of the Sisters started sending memorandums to the Management of the Ursuline Franciscan Educational Society to begin a high school with English as medium of instruction. The Management finally heeded their request and St Therese English Medium High School was started in the year 2006. One room of the Kannada Medium School was occupied for this purpose.
Sr. Linet D’Souza, the headmistress of Kannada Medium High School shouldered the added responsibility. Sr.Shellin Rodrigues and Sr. Anitha D’Souza were the pioneering teaching staff. The Staff of Kannada Medium School was the backbone for this School as they used their expertise to teach the students in the English Medium.
Needs were many, funds were few, but Sr Linet D’Souza gave her best to fulfil them one by one. A new block for the school building adjacent to the existing Kannada Medium School was soon built by the Mangalore Province. Sr. Theresia Serra who succeeded Sr. Linet did her best to achieve good results in SSLC Examination. Since 2006, 248 students have passed out from this School.
In the year 2012-13 the parish school too started an English Medium high school which came as a big blow to the St Therese English Medium High School as the Parish Primary School was a feeder school for St Therese’s. But God provides. Due to the dedicated staff, cooperative parents and supportive alumni the School has a good number of students in each class room.
Creating a harmonious society is the main goal of St. Therese English Medium High school. The following Headmistress headed the institution Sr. Linet D’Souza (2003-2006) Sr. Hilda Clotti Pinto (2006-2007) Sr. Therese Serra (2007-20130 Sr. Anitha D’Souza J. ( 2013-2015) At present Sr. Leena D’Souza is administering the institution from 2015. In the year 2016 St. Therese English Medium High School celebrated Decennial Celebration of its existence. ‘Spark’ souvenir was brought out during this occasion of rejoicing. The service and the good will of the staff are admirable. May blessings of St. Therese of Child Jesus be on this school always.
