Bhatkal is a small coastal town in the south of North Kanara, on the northen border of Udupi District. The West Coast National Highway 66 passes through it. The Muslim Navayaths and the Hindu communities are predominant in Bhatkal. Fr Vincent Pereira, the parish priest of Murudeshwar, persuaded the Bishop of Belgaum to invite the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters to the Diocese and in particular to his parish at Ternamakki. In 1971, at the invitation of the then Bishop of Belgaum, Most Rev. Ignatius Lobo, a small convent was opened by the name
Anand Ashram at Ternamakki. From here two Sisters were visiting the families at Bhatkal and teaching the tiny tots. Later in 1973 they opened a convent in Bhatkal itself which in subsequent years gave birth to a prestigious educational Institution – Anand Ashram Convent, School.

Anand Ashram Convent School managed by Ursuline Franciscan Educational Society was started in 1971 at Ternamakki at the request of the then Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Vincent Pereira. But recognizing the dire need of the people of Bhatkal, the sisters in 1973, decided to plant their presence by starting a convent and a primary school in a small rented building in Bapu Sahed Compound, near the old bus stand with a motto “ LEAD KINDLY LIGHT”. Within a couple of years the number of students had outgrown the capacity of the rented school building. Seeing the growing number of the students and limited space of the rented building ,Rev. Fr Vincent Pereira obtained two acres of land from the Government at Susgadi Grama on the Sagar Road for the purpose of the convent and school building. The institution paid the land occupancy price and took over the possession of the land in 1973. Sr Blanch Mascarenhas became the first Headmistress of Anand Ashram Convent English Medium Higher Primary School. It was Sr Barbara Franco who started constructing the first building in 1975 to house both Joyland Nursery School and Anand Ashram Convent Higher Primary School during her tenure as Headmistress. Additions were made as per the requirements in the following years.
The appreciation of the people took the form of more students enrolling in the School. In the succeeding years Sr Syra Veigas (1974-75 & 1981-93), Sr Barbara Franco (1975-81) Sr Bibiana Noronha (1993-95) Sr Margaret D’Souza (1995-98), Sr Irene Mathias (1998-2001) and Sr Lucella Coelho (2001-2012) were the Headmistresses who left no stone unturned to make this abode of knowledge a pleasant place for learning and for bringing out the best even from the least and last.
The aim of the motto is to make boys and girls “ CHILDREN OF LIGHT”, so that they may shine in the present world and also enlighten others. Every effort is made to impart our students a sound and all round education in keeping with the Nation’s aspiration and to make them morally, physically and mentally fit to become active, useful and worthy citizens of our dear Motherland. Each individual year has contributed its own uniqueness in enhancing the success story. Starting off with just a handful of children and growing in strength year after year, the school has come a long way. The achievements of the school have not been overnight miracles. It has been a careful planning, of infrastructure, quality teaching, disciplined and affective nurturing and commitment to make Anand Ashram Convent School what it is today.
Sr.Saritha Thoras the present Headmistress of the school is equally committed as her predecessors. She uses an integral approach in the teaching, learning process in the school and tries her very best to meet the expectation of the parents. 3648 students have successfully completed their studies and passed through the portals of this school. At present there are four sections in class V & VII and rest of the classes have three each sections numbering 1189 . The fourth section for the class Ist was added in the Academic year 2016-17 because the School had witnessed a flow of admissions and there were no spare rooms to accommodate the students. So trusting in the providential care of God the Management along with the support and co-operation of the provincial and her team ventured into having a new block to the Primary section which was inaugurated on 14th August 2017. Now the Anand Ashram Convent Primary School is been well furnished with the Infrastructure, Auditorium, Educomp Smartclass and CC Camera in every class rooms, School Buses, Generator, Fire extinguishers, Benaka Aqua purifiers and Computer Education for all the children. The students excel in all the inter school competitions, Pratibha Karanji and Sports. The students have placed a record of participating in Pratibha Karanji up to District level and sports up to Divisional level. The School enjoys good support from the parents. A spacious play ground and a compound wall for the safety of the children is the necessity of the School at this point of time.
