Serchhip town is the headquarters of Serchhip District in the Indian State of Mizoram and also the headquarters of Serchhip Sadar subdivision. It lies in the central part of Mizoram and 112 kilometers away from the State capital city of Aizawl. The district has the highest literacy in the whole of India. The origin of the name comes from citrus trees found on the top of the first hill of the then Serchhip village. The word meaning Ser-chhip is citrus-on-to’. To the former Serchhip village, in the town area New Serchhip and Chhiahtlang villages are recently added. Little Flower Convent School is situated in Power and Electricity Colony, Serchhip (P&E Veng) Bishop Denzil D’Souza of Silchar approached Mother Ernestine with a plea to start the mission in Silchar Diocese. Accordingly Chhingchhip and Serchhip centres were established. Sisters Carmelita Monteiro, Severine Carlo and Severine D’Souza landed in Serchhip on January 24, 1976 as the pioneering band of Sisters.
Sr Carmelita Monteiro was the first headmistress and was succeeded by Sr Lenita D’Souza, Sr Jacintha Monteiro, , SrSeverine Carlo, Sr Philomena Correa and Sr. Veera D’Costa . It was a great challenge to be a missionary in the land where the Sisters did not know the language of the place. The then Mizo medium school was converted into English medium and Mr Ambrose Sakhuluna was incorporated into Little Flower Convent School as a permanent Mizo and Craft teacher. The School obtained permission from the education Department on February 2, 1976.
The present headmistress is Sr Celine D’Souza . 3,366 students have passed out from this School. The strength of the School at present is 1008. The School was upgraded from primary to middle school in 1980. It was further upgraded to deficit system in 1990 (admitted to partial grant).
Rev. Sr. Doreen D’Souza Superior General visited the School in 2013 and the School Inspection was done by the Provincial Superior in 2014. Mr Lalthakima Chhangte who studied in Little Flower Convent School from KG1 to class VII placed in 3 rd position in Economics under NEHU and currently is posted in Lunglei as Sub- Deputy Commissioner.
A cyclone hit the School in April 2000 in which a large number of students and teachers were injured but God saved them from any loss of life. Interference of Students’ Union in the school matters, implementation of RTE-2009 & CCE, indiscipline, broken families, lack of trained teachers, influence of Mass Media, mass promotion, consumption of supari and tobacco are some of the challenges the School face at present.
However the Sisters also see God’s blessings in the encouragement, guidance and timely help they receive from the Ursuline Franciscan Educational Society and UFS of North-East, the support from the School Management Committee and the trust the parents bestow on them. The School has good reputation, committed teachers and gifted students. The School remains grateful to Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for grant-in-aid and midday meals.
