Belthangady is a beautiful town just at the foothills of the Western Ghats. St Therese Convent, a community of Ursuline Franciscan Sisters, is just opposite the Most Holy Redeemer parish church at Belthangady. It is on the Mangalore – Dharmasthala route. It was in 1945 that the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters started sowing the seeds of quality education in the parish school. They were invited there by Rev. Fr E.P. Dias.
Though in the year 1965 Kannada Medium High School was started by Ursuline Franciscan Education Society, it was only in 2011 that it was upgraded into a college. The request for starting the college came again from the parents. The Annual General Body Meeting of the Parent Teacher Association of ST. Therese High School was the forum for the parents to appeal for a Pre University College as this meeting is usually presided over by the Secretary or the Deputy Secretary of Educational Society.
Investing in an educational institution is always a liability. The Mangalore Province had to make a costly decision. Sr. Theresia Serra the Headmistress and Sr. Lilly Pinto, The Deputy Secretary, worked hard hand in hand to obtain the permission from the Government of Karnataka. On June 10, 2011, permission was granted to start a composite Pre University College with Arts and Commerce sections and Sr. Theresia Serra, The Headmistress of Kannada High School, by virtue of its composition became the Principal of the College too.
Sr. Shalini D’Souza, Sr. Laveena Jyothi D’Souza and Sr. Shanthi Ancilla Pereira made up the staff. As Sr. Theresia had to manage two High Schools simultaneously Sr. Laveena Jyothi D’Souza took up the responsibility of Pre University College which she did with utmost diligence and dedication. The college made history as the first batch of 29 students walked out with 100% results securing first place in the Taluk in April 2013.Not only that St. Therese Pre University College has secured 100% results in the year 2014-15 too.
A convenient spacious, beautiful building well equipped staff and other facilities draw the students from neighboring high schools to St. Therese Pre University College. The Mangalore Province has strained its funds to finance the construction. Since the college is flourishing it requires a canteen, and to introduce science stream. At present there are 89 students enrolled for commerce and Arts. Sr. Laveena D’Souza was appointed in 2015 as Principal of this institution.
