Bhatkal is a small coastal town in the south of North Kanara, on the northern border of Udupi District. The West Coast National Highway 66 passes through it. The Muslim Nawayaths and the Hindu communities are predominant in Bhatkal. Fr Vincent Pereira, the parish priest of Murudeshwar, persuaded the Bishop of Belgaum to invite the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters to the Diocese and in particular to his parish at Ternamakki. In 1971, at the invitation of the then Bishop of Belgaum, Most Rev. Ignatius Lobo, a small convent was opened by the name Anand Ashram Convent at Ternamakki. From here two Sisters were visiting the families at Bhatkal and teaching the tiny tots. Later in 1973 they opened a convent in Bhatkal itself which in subsequent years gave birth to a prestigious educational Institution – Anand Ashram Convent Institutions.

For the people of Bhatkal and especially those who got educated under the Sisters, Anand Ashram was the first choice when it came to selecting an institution for their children to study in. But Anand Ashram restricted its education till Class VII for quite a long time. Many of the girl children cut short their education because either they would not agree to go to any other school or their parents would not send them. The boys on the other hand continued their schooling but failed to pursue further studies due to lack of follow-up. Hence appeals from parents to start a high school kept coming year after year. There was no choice for the Sisters but to pay heed to their plea. Thus finally Anand Ashram High School was established on June 1, 2004 after obtaining the permission from the Department of Education.
Sr Letitia Fernandes who had the experience in managing schools was given the responsibility as the first headmistress and Sr Benny D’Souza was the assistant teacher. As the High School had no building of its own, classes were held in the Higher Primary School building for two years. On March 28, 2006 the new school building was inaugurated and the High School was shifted to the new block. Mangalore Province financed a major portion of the construction cost. In the year 2010 an auditorium was built on the second floor. At present the building has two floors with a magnificent auditorium which serves as a multi-purpose hall for all the activities of the School.
