Rev. Fr Antony Fernandes, the then parish priest, on his visit to the Ursuline Franciscan Provincialate in Mysore met the Provincial Superior Rev. Sr Jyothi Fernandes and made a request to send the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters to launch into the North Karnataka mission. The request was accepted by the Provincial Superior. This is the first mission of the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters of Mysore Province in North Karnataka. Bishop Joseph D’Silva of Bellary officially invited Sisters to the Diocese. On June 16, 2001 Sisters Petronilla D’Silva and Janitha Rodrigues came to Shorapur as pioneering members. Sisters were given the parish house as their residence.
After studying the educational situation in Shorapur taluk the Sisters started the teaching apostolate in 2006 in the parish house where they were residing. They started pre-primary classes with 28 children with Sr Blanch D’Souza as the first headmistress. Education in the local schools was not qualitative. Hence the main aim to start the school was to impart quality and integrated education to the children of surrounding villages.
Serving the need of education and in line with people’s demands 2.10 guntas of land was purchased in Kumbarpet on April 25, 2005. In 2006, the foundation for the school at Kumbarpet was laid. On August 12, 2007 Prerana Higher Primary School was blessed and inaugurated. On December 31 the School was shifted from Shorapur to Kumbarpet. Sr Cynthia Wilma Rego assumed her responsibility as headmistress in 2007 and worked tirelessly, sometimes even doing the odd jobs. The Mysore Province which ventured into the African Mission in 2011 withdrew Sr Wilma for a noble cause and replaced her with another efficient and dedicated person, Sr Reena D’Souza.
The year 2009 was a sad year in the history of North Karnataka. The whole of North Karnataka was deluged with floods. The Sisters too experienced the effects of the floods, including problems with the road which connects the main road to the School. A cotton factory very close to the school has posed problems from the early times.
At present the School has advanced to class VII. LKG to Class IV are divided into two sections. The total number of students in the present academic year is 800. To accommodate the growing number of sections second floor is constructed in the year 2008. It I spartially financed by Inde Espoir, France, through the mediation of Fr Patrick Langue S.J. Permission is sought from the Department of Education for Class VIII to be started in June 2014. Prerana School is known as the best school in the whole of Shorapur Taluk, for its discipline and quality with value-based education.
The Sisters and teachers try to reach out to each and every child especially the slow learners by visiting their families and conducting extra coaching and remedial classes after the school hours. While the School strives to find its relevance in the context of the needs of society, several other activities have found their rightful place in the school curriculum. Throughout the year the students are engaged in curricular and extra-curricular activities such as School Parliament, celebration of national and local festivals, Annual Day, Sports Meet, Talents Day, Physical exercises, Yoga, and School Band and so on, creating a healthy competition among students through formation of Houses. Although many of the students come from poor and marginalized families from the 50 surrounding villages, the School has made its impression in the place.
The sincere and faithful dedication of the Sisters and the staff has brought the best possible service for the all-round and complete development of each and every student of the institution. The parents/guardians too are included as part of the larger plan. Ample empowerment to create a society in the back drop of scriptural values of peace, love and concern with justice and fellowship based on mutual respect is visible. The people never fail to generously recognize and value our services in a larger perspective for the love of God.
