Equal access to education, irrespective of race, gender, religion, political belief and economic background at all levels of education from childhood to higher education is now a fundamental right throughout our country. Good education equips the person with necessary skills and values to take up the responsibilities in society. It will allow the person to live a satisfying life. The primary objective of imparting skills is aimed at preparing any person for gainful employment.
Sr Edilburga Monteiro, the then Regional Superior was heartbroken to see the small children playing on the roadside. As she was visiting their houses children started to ask her “Hum ko bi school me lelo” – ‘take us also into the school’. The parents were not able to send them to school because of the financial problems. To educate these children, the existing building was put to use in the afternoon and thus started the Evening Section.
Sisters Edilburga and Leena Mathias were the pioneers in this humanitarian venture. Sr Jyothsna D’Souza was the first headmistress. Assisi Evening School provides facilities for these unfortunate children to get education at the lowest cost and at their convenient time. The objective being “to equip the children of the most vulnerable, poor and weak sections of society with basic life skills and values necessary for the survival and development of a human being”. The School begins at 1:30 p.m. and closes at 5 p.m. Sr Jessy Monteiro, Sr MillyFernanades and Sr EugineMonteiro as headmistresses gave their unsurpassed services to help the students to pursue their studies. In the beginning Sisters were finding it difficult to pay the salary to the teachers. Therefore our aspirants (candidates) were engaged in part-time services.
Sr Irene Goveas was appointed in 2006 and worked as the Headmistress until 2016 At present the total strength of the School is 1038 among whom 50% of the students pay undersized fees. Remaining 50% do not pay. The Province helps out to meet the needs of the School especially in the payment of the staff. With the help of the Congregation and generous donors a beautiful school building was put up in 2007and the students were provided with better facilities and full-time regular classes with the common syllabus of the State. The students were provided computer classes as well as all the other needed facilities just like any other school in the State. This facility is kept open for all the students even today.
In the recent years 80% of the students continue their study after class VIII, complete their matriculation and go for further studies and get employed in different sectors. 10 th October 2015 Alumni association was inaugurated in the school. 49 students were present.
The Management is in the process of upgrading the School since most of the students find it difficult to get admission in good schools after completing class VIII. The School has a committed and hard-working headmistress in the person of Sr Benisha Bosly Thomas and equally committed staff to continue the education to the less privileged students who can look forward to help only from the School since a majority of the parents are illiterate and helpless. Assisi School, Dimapur, Evening Section is a blessing from God and a boon to the underprivileged people of Dimapur.
